SEED Studio Workshop – Summer Intensive at WHI
This summer, in collaboration with WHI, RIC Technology, and Young Industries, Houston Community College's Interior Design Program will host the SEED (Studio Experience for Emerging Designers) Studio Workshop at the West Houston Institute. This intensive five-week course offers students a unique, hands-on, project-based learning opportunity focused on innovation, fabrication, and emerging technologies in design.
Students will explore the history and evolution of 3D concrete printing, gain experience in computer modeling for additive manufacturing, and engage in material studies, prototyping, and fabrication processes. Students will work alongside industry leaders at the forefront of 3D concrete printing and advanced fabrication throughout the course. The workshop will culminate in designing and creating a tangible, finished product using cutting-edge 3D concrete printing technology.
Through this immersive experience, students will expand their technical skills, apply design thinking, and build their professional portfolios with innovative, real-world projects demonstrating creativity, craftsmanship, and collaboration with industry experts.
SEED Studio Workshop 2025: Design Prompt
Hospitable Habitats: Designing for Coexistence
In a world facing urgent environmental and social challenges, the designer's role is evolving. Today’s designers are not only tasked with creating functional or beautiful objects—they are called to shape more inclusive, resilient, and empathetic environments.
This summer, as part of the SEED Studio Workshop at WHI, you will explore what it means to design Hospitable Habitats—objects or environments that foster coexistence between humans, nature, and technology. Using concrete as your primary medium and 3D printing as your tool of exploration, you will conceptualize and fabricate an exterior object that redefines hospitality in the built environment.
Registration for this learning experience is limited. All interested students must complete an online application, which will close on May 1, 2025. A committee will review applications, and successful candidates will be notified by Wednesday, May 7th, and announced at our REVEAL Portfolio Show on Thursday, May 8th.
